"Amazing Grace"
is not just for the Scots and Irish.

Color BagpipeA third of my recipients are neither Scots, British nor Irish. The bagpipe is truly a universal instrument. At one time, every court in Europe had bagpipers. King Henry VIII had Belgian bagpipers in his court because they were considered the best in Europe at the time. For those of you who think the early Scots invented the bagpipe, sorry, it was brought to western Europe by the Romans! However, the Great Highland Bagpipe or the Great Irish Warpipe have three drones (the long wooden tubes sticking up in the air) and that makes them unique. Most ancient bagpipes had one, two or no drones.

Winter Rules: I still play the pipes in the winter but with a few adjustments for the weather and luckily most events are inside.

The bagpipe can change very fast in the cold weather or wind. Meaning, they go out of tune quickly when you play outside. Not only does it sound like you are choking a cat but you can crack the instrument when its gets near freezing. Plus and probably most important, my knees get cold!
Funerals are a good example of playing the instrument in short spurts outside if you are careful. Stepping out of the church to play in and out usually works. Many cemeteries have chapels so  playing into the chapel and outside at the end of the service can work as well. Graveside services are usually out. Keeping the bagpipe at an even temperature is a good idea and a challenge any time of the year but more important in the winter months.
